There are many environmental issues in Russia. Many of the issues have been linked to policies made during the Soviet Union, a time when officials thought that pollution control was an unimportant factor compared to economic development and industrialization. As a result, 40% of Russia's territory began showing signs of significant ecological problems by the 1990s, due to a diverse number of environmental issues, including deforestation, energy irresponsibility, pollution, and nuclear waste. Because of these problems, areas with high radiation may be evacuated, resulting in a loss of population in a area, and an expansion of population in another area. This might result in unemployment, because there are too many people relocated in one area, and not enough jobs. Ultimately, this will lead to a decrease in GDP.
